SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Valley remained shut for the 73rd consecutive day, with authorities imposing curfew and other restrictions in all 10 districts of the Valley including Srinagar, Pulwama and Baramulla to prevent anti-India rallies and protests.
According to Kashmir Media Service, all educational institutions, main markets, public transport and other businesses remained suspended. A police official confirmed that curfew had been imposed in Pulwama and Baramulla districts, while it remains enforced in Shopian and several areas of Srinagar.
He said the curfew was imposed in view of call by the joint Hurriyet leadership for a march to Baramulla, Pulwama and Srinagar districts as part of the weekly protest programme. Many people were injured in Shopian district when Indian forces used force on protesters. As soon as people started gathering at the freedom rally venue at Vehil, village defying curfew, forces’ personnel swung into action and fired tear smoke canisters and pellets on the protesters.
Authorities had clamped strict curfew in the area to thwart a proposed freedom rally in the village about five kilometers away from Shopian town. The injured were shifted to hospitals in Harmain, Sedaw and Kachdora as they were not allowed to reach the district hospital due to strict curfew. Meanwhile, unknown people snatched weapons from the guards of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Islamabad district president, last night.
